The Monastery of Montserrat, a Benedictine sanctuary set among the distinctive rock spires of the Montserrat mountain

Actualizado el

The Monastery of Montserrat is a Benedictine sanctuary set among the distinctive rock spires of the Montserrat mountain, a landscape of conglomerate rock sculpted by erosion. It is Catalonia’s spiritual centre, famous for the Virgin of Montserrat (“La Moreneta”) and for its Escolania, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe.

Where is the Monastery of Montserrat?

It stands on the Montserrat mountain, in the municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat, about 50 km from Barcelona. The complex sits on a natural ledge overlooking the Llobregat valley and the Pre-Pyrenees.

When and how was it built?

The Benedictine monastery took shape from the 11th century onwards over earlier hermitages. The basilica has Renaissance lines and was restored and enlarged in the 19th and 20th centuries after Napoleonic destruction. The Romanesque statue of the Mare de Déu de Montserrat is polychrome wood; her feast is celebrated on 27 April.

Why is it important?

  • Spirituality and art: a major Marian sanctuary with a medieval image venerated by pilgrims.
  • Unique landscape: rocky needles and viewpoints turn the visit into a natural and scenic experience.
  • Music and tradition: the Escolania sings in the basilica on school days.

What can we see?

  • Basilica and Camarín of the Virgin, where “La Moreneta” is venerated.
  • Montserrat Museum, with art, archaeology and goldsmithing collections.
  • Sant Joan funicular, rising to high viewpoints and mid-mountain trails.
  • Santa Cova funicular and the rosary path, a panoramic route to the chapel where, according to tradition, the image was found.
  • Traditional viewpoints and hermitages across the range; for hikers, the ascent to Sant Jeroni, the highest point.

How to organize the visit?

Arrive by rack railway from Monistrol de Montserrat, by cable car (Aeri de Montserrat) or by road. It is advisable to come early, especially at weekends. To hear the Escolania, check the timetable (they usually sing at midday in term time). Wear comfortable footwear if you plan to hike.

Where to find schedules and prices?

See the sanctuary’s official websites for basilica, museum, rack railway and funiculars and for services with the Escolania; you will find up-to-date timetables, booking and prices.

What else nearby?

  • Monistrol de Montserrat, the town at the foot of the mountain, with bridges and views of the massif.
  • Collbató and the Coves del Salnitre, caves with curious karst formations.
  • Manresa, with the Cave of Saint Ignatius and a historic centre.
  • Routes in the Natural Park, signposted trails among forests, boulder fields and rocky needles.

In summary, Montserrat unites sanctuary, music and mountain in one place: an experience combining devotion, art and nature amid an unmistakable rocky landscape.
