Air-Raid Shelter under Plaza de Santiago in Jaén
Hidden beneath Plaza de Santiago, the Santiago Air-Raid Shelter takes you back to 1937 Jaén, when the Condor Legion’s bombing forced hundreds of civilians to seek refuge underground.
The Jaén bombing
On April 1, 1937, the Condor Legion attacked Jaén, killing around 160 people and injuring many, just days before Guernica.
Shelter architecture
- Area: 1,300 m² under the square, capacity ~1,000 people.
- Entrances: four access points on Almendros Aguilar street.
- Galleries: three 1.5 m-wide perpendicular tunnels with vents and built-in benches.
Memory and reflection
Today it serves as a place of remembrance: its silent corridors invite reflection on war and the civilians who sheltered beneath the roar of aircraft.
