Hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida and its Goya frescoes

In the Hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida rest the remains of Francisco de Goya, whose spectacular frescoes adorn its walls, making it an essential stop for art lovers in Madrid.
Construction of the Hermitage
Commissioned by Charles IV in 1792 and completed in 1798 under Filippo Fontana, this chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua houses a sculpted statue by José Ginés.
Twin Hermitage
To protect Goya’s priceless frescoes, a twin hermitage was built in 1926 to take over the liturgy, preserving the original as a museum. The historic chapel is on the right when approaching from Goya’s monument.
