Mojácar, its whitewashed houses and narrow streets have earned it recognition as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain

Actualizado el

Mojácar is a white village perched on a slope of the Sierra de Cabrera, famous for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets and viewpoints over the Mediterranean. Its Moorish layout, the symbol known as the Indalo and its bohemian atmosphere have earned it a place in the network The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain.

Where is Mojácar?

It is located in the northeast of the province of Almería, Andalusia. The historic nucleus, known as Mojácar Pueblo, stands on top of a hill; at its feet stretches Mojácar Playa, with kilometres of coastline and promenades.

When and how did the village form?

Its current appearance dates from the Andalusian period: a maze of alleys, passages and small squares adapted to the terrain. After the Christian conquest, temples and fortifications were built on former Muslim spaces, preserving the original layout and the popular lime-and-stone architecture.

Why is it so notable?

  • White architecture: whitewashed facades, flowered doors and grilles, and photogenic corners at every turn.
  • Heritage and symbol: presence of the Indalo on gateways and tiles, and remains of walls and historic gates.
  • Landscape and light: viewpoints that dominate the valley and the sea, with famous sunsets.

What can you see on the visit?

  • Puerta de la Ciudad and Plaza Nueva, access and natural balcony over the valley.
  • Castle viewpoint and other viewpoints throughout the old town.
  • Church of Santa María, a fortress-like church presiding over the village.
  • Fuente Mora, an emblematic multi-spout fountain linked to local history.
  • Barrio del Arrabal, the former artisan suburb outside the walls.
  • Mojácar Playa, with beaches such as Marina de la Torre, El Cantal, El Descargador and La Ventanica.

How to organise the visit?

It is advisable to park in the designated areas at the foot of the old town and walk up. Wear comfortable shoes (there are slopes and steps) and avoid the hottest hours in summer. You can combine a morning in the village (streets, viewpoints and tapas) with an afternoon at the beach.

Where to get information on schedules and activities?

Visit the Mojácar Tourist Office (in the village and on the beach) for maps, walking routes, cultural programme and festivals such as the Moors and Christians in June.

What else to see nearby?

  • Garrucha, a seaside town known for its promenade and red prawns.
  • Vera, historic centre and coast with wide beaches.
  • Sierra de Cabrera, hiking routes and viewpoints.
  • Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, coves, volcanic formations and salt flats within an hour.
  • Tabernas Desert, a unique landscape and former film location.

In short, Mojácar combines the charm of an Andalusian white village with the appeal of its beaches, offering history, views and gastronomy in an unforgettable Mediterranean setting.
